Kevin Feige Clarifies James Gunn’s Previous Role With The MCU
I’ve written about James Gunn for all the wrong reasons lately. It is an unfortunate situation that happened, which we don’t need to rehash here. We will get to see his work again, when he brings The Suicide Squad back to the big screen.
Before that though, Gunn was thought to be the man in charge for the cosmic side of the MCU going forward. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 was meant to set up the next 10-20 years of cosmic adventures, with Gunn acting as the godfather of that section of the universe. Or at least, that is what we were lead to believe.
But in a new interview with CinemaBlend, Feige said that wasn’t the case.
“His influence was Guardians. It was Guardians. It was his input on Guardians and the Avengers films, as you’ve seen in Infinity War, and on the Guardians 3 script, which we’re still using. So you’ll see that influence. I think online, sort of the notion of ‘architect across multiple cosmic things’ was slightly blown out of proportion.”
That makes sense. The architect of the MCU is Feige himself. For him to sort of relegate a piece of that to someone else felt strange. The good news is that Gunn’s Guardians 3 script will be used, so their plans for the Marvel Cosmic Universe seem intact. Unfortunately, it seems that Howard The Duck and MODOK are not part of those plans, since they are getting animated TV shows on Hulu from Kevin Smith and Patton Oswalt. But the rest of your favorite cosmic beings are probably fair game.
No word on when we will see Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, but the cast will appear in Avengers: Endgame in April, so fans can their fix relatively soon. It’ll be interesting to see if they will ever team up with Captain Marvel for a cosmic adventure. Carol Danvers is the future of the MCU, so I expect her to anchor some of the cosmic parts, like Stark did the Earth parts.
