COME ON AND SLAM! AND WELCOME TO THE JAM!

Okay, sorry. I just had to get it out of my system. In case you hadn’t already heard, it was announced last year that Black Panther writer-director Ryan Coogler would produce the long-awaited sequel to the 1990’s classic Space Jam, a crossover between NBA superstar Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes. The film will be directed by experimental filmmaker Terence Nash (Random Acts of Flyness, The Oversimplification of Her Beauty) and see LeBron James as the new legendary basketball player to join the Tune Squad’s ranks for an epic game. Now fans finally have a release date!

Warner Bros. has announced that Space Jam 2 will arrive in theaters July 16, 2021. Additionally the studio announced that Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong and Gary Dauberman’s Annabelle sequel have both had their release dates bumped up. The Monsterverse blockbuster has shifted its original May 22, 2020 release date to March 13, 2020, likely to avoid a potential box office showdown between it and Universal’s untitled ninth Fast & Furious film which was recently announced to hit theaters on that May date. Meanwhile the third Annabelle film, which will see The Conjuring stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles, will now arrive in theaters later this year on June 28 rather than its original date on July 3.

Honestly speaking, I’m more than a little stunned that we’re actually seeing a Space Jam sequel finally happen. The original film hit theaters almost twenty-three years ago, after all! There’s a sense of nostalgia that I feel anytime I find myself muttering out the lyrics to “I Believe I Can Fly” or hear Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle” on the radio that comes directly from watching Space Jam numerous times as a kid. Hopefully Coogler, Nash and James will be able to strike a similar chord for audiences with the sequel.
