Legendary To Develop Series Set In L. Frank Baum’s THE LAND OF OZ

Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

The Wizard Of Oz is one of the most famous movies in American human history. If the Earth was uninhabitable, and we could only bring 10 films with us to our new planet, The Wizard Of Oz would be one of them. Well, the classic film is (very loosely) based on a series of books from L. Frank Baum and set in his mythical Land of Oz. Now Legendary Entertainment wants to flesh out that world more on the small screen.

Variety reports that the studio is set to develop a series taking place in The Land Of Oz. The quick synopsis that Variety provides have some familiar elements to it that fans of the film might recognize.

The series will examine stories and characters in Oz that haven’t been previously explored. When the return of a long-exiled Witch brings fear, division and war to Oz, the only hope is a servant girl who may become the most powerful and dangerous woman in the land.

This isn’t the first attempt to do this. There was a movie in 2013 starring James Franco called Oz the Great and Powerful, which was supposed to serve as an origin story for the Wizard. More was supposed to follow, but people didn’t respond to it well.

There are 14 Oz books written by Baum for the series to mine things from. There are even more from other authors that the Baum camp considers canon too. There are even more that are alternate takes on things that are not canon, but I guess could be fair game to incorporate. The point is, there is a ton of Oz material out there to make a pretty great TV show from.

Ed Ricourt, who wrote Now You See Me and it’s sequel, will write and produce the series.

No word yet on where this will air, but it feels like a property that will get scooped up quickly by someone. This feels like it will be much more at home on a streaming service like Amazon, Netflix, or Hulu, than it would be a weekly series on CBS for your grandmother to watch.

When we here more on The Land Of Oz series, we will be sure to let you know.
