James Cameron Discusses Jake and Neytiri’s New Family In AVATAR 2
When audiences last saw main protagonist Jake Sully at the end of James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar, he was getting ready to start a new life as one of the Na’vi and continue his romance with Neytiri on the colorful world of Pandora. In the real world, eleven years will have passed since the original film debuted when its sequel hits theaters in December 2020. According to Cameron, a similar passage of time will have passed in-film when audiences reunite with Jake and Neytiri on the big screen in Avatar 2. And the director adds that the duo won’t be alone when we see them again either!
In a new interview with Empire, Cameron revealed that the couple are still together in Avatar 2 and now have an eight year old daughter… who unfortunately will bear witness to a scene in the sequel that sees Jake and Neytiri bicker with one another.
Cameron explained, “There’s a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline. I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the eight year old hiding under the structure and peeking in […] Having gone through the experience with [Sam Worthington] on Avatar, I now knew how to write the Jake character going forward across the emotional rollercoaster of the next four movies. It’s been tough on him. He’s done two pictures back to back now, because we did 2 and 3 together. He had to go to some dark places.”
The director also clarified a few details about the sequels’ production process, explaining that the films have only finished the motion capture portions of shooting so far. “[Performance-capture] is the vast majority of the characters, and that is the vast majority of the running time of the film,” Cameron explained, “but that pesky little live-action component is going to cost me five months of my life, across the two movies.”
