AQUAMAN 2 Takes A Big Step Forward As Studio Taps A Writer

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

This headline shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone that’s been paying attention since late December. It was only two weeks ago that Aquaman passed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises as the highest grossing DC film ever, after all. In fact it was just a week ago that our very own MFR wrote a thought piece on what might be going on behind-the-scenes for Superman and how it all relates to what he called “the Aquaman Effect.” Heck, a spinoff based on the Trench was announced just a few days ago too. So with all of this importance put on James Wan’s film, of course an Aquaman 2 was coming.

Reports are out that Warner Bros is officially developing an Aquaman 2, which will be penned by the first film’s co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. While The Wrap first reported Johnson-McGoldrick’s hiring for the film, THR released a more thorough piece on the news and revealed additional details of the current state of affairs on the film.

Aside from Johnson-McGoldrick’s return as the sequel’s screenwriter, THR reports that Wan and Peter Safran are currently in negotiations to produce the sequel. However the site adds that it currently remains to be seen if Wan will also direct the sequel, noting that the filmmaker was “in no rush to jump back in” and that the studio did not want to pressure Wan or his regular collaborators.

I definitely hope that Wan returns to direct the sequel himself, as I think he played a big part in why the first film was such a success. Although if a replacement in the director’s chair does wind up becoming necessary, I think there are a number of other filmmakers out there that could deliver a great Aquaman 2 as well.
