Taika Waititi Wants To Make Another MCU Film…Just Not GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
Well, that’s one name off the “Who will replace James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3?” list! From the moment it was announced that Gunn had been fired from Guardians 3, the leading fan choice for the job was far and away Thor: Ragnarok and What We Do In The Shadows filmmaker Taika Waititi. The pairing made sense, considering the massive success Waititi had revitalizing Thor into a comedic lead and embracing the wackier, more cosmic side of Marvel’s vast universe much in the same way Gunn had originally introduced that side of the MCU to mass audiences with the first Guardians film.
“I want to do another movie with them,” Waititi stated at the recent FX TCA. However, logical move or no, Waititi also confirmed he has no interest in replacing Gunn for the third Guardians film. He continued, “For me, those are James (Gunn)’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It feels kind of awkward.”
Then the conversation switched gears, as he was asked about working in the Star Wars universe.
“It was amazing,” Waititi also said when asked about his experience working on the upcoming Disney+ series The Mandalorian. “Favreau is a genius… it’s fun doing something in the Star Wars universe. It’s a strangest to see a stormtrooper, and then when you’re doing a scene with 50 or 60 of them, it’s amazing.”
When asked if fans could expect to see the director inject his distinctive style of comedy into the show, Waititi answered, “A little bit, but Star Wars is very different to the Marvel style. The tone of the first films really should be adhered to, it’s what the fans like. You can’t disrespect it. Definitely my tone is in there.”
