Johnson Says He’s Not In FAST AND FURIOUS 9, As New HOBBS AND SHAW Logo Debuts
The Fast and Furious franchise clawed its way out of obscurity into a billion dollar franchise. A big part of that reinvention was the introduction of Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs in Fast Five. Since his introduction, he’s been around ever since. But with Fast and Furious 9 gearing up to start shooting soon, that streak will come to an end.
While we have the spinoff Hobbs and Shaw to look forward to, Johnson confirms that (as of now) he will not be in the next main entry in the franchise.

“The plan has always been for the Fast and Furious universe to grow and expand. As of now, we’re not in Fast 9 because they’re getting ready to start shooting. But who knows with Fast 10 and down the road, you never know. Because look, at the end of the day, the truth is, there’s unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom. It’s unfinished.”
I know Johnson has a busy schedule as he’s gearing up to shoot the Jumanji sequel soon. But some of it might have to do with the feud between Diesel and Johnson. Johnson called him out on the set of the last movie for his unprofessionalism and things got heated. Tyrese Gibson even got involved and blasted the spinoff for taking away from “the family”. While there was no definitive end to the feud, cool heads could prevail, and we could see Hobbs back with Dom and his team.
If he doesn’t, there are potentials for more spinoffs. Hobbs and Shaw will open the door for new stories and potential sequels, and he could even cameo in the all female spinoff coming soon too.
One thing is for sure: The franchise isn’t going away anytime soon, and Universal will want to keep box-office draw Johnson attached to the franchise as long as possible. So while Fast 9 will most likely be Hobbs-less, the franchise won’t be.
And while we’re discussing this, check out the new logo that was just released for the Hobbs and Shawspinoff:
