Box Office: GLASS Is Half Full (Or Is It Half Empty?)

M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, the long awaited follow up to Unbreakable, as well as the sequel to his hit 2016 film Split, opened at number one with $40 million. Box office prognosticators projected that the film could possibly open to a much larger $70 million, but with a reported budget of a mere $20 million, I don’t think Shyamalan, or anyone at Blumhouse is complaining. Also, with most schools closed tomorrow for MLK, the PG-13 film could have larger than normal numbers for a Monday.

So, really, it comes down to how you look at things for Glass. It may have fallen short of the lofty expectations, but it’s still a win any way you slice it thanks to that low budget.

Dropping one spot to number two is the Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston comedy The Upside. The film fell only 23% from its opening last week to finish the weekend with $15.6 million. It’s now at $43.9 million domestic.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly Surprised everyone with a number three opening and a higher than expected $10.6 million. That’s not bad for a movie that’s only playing in about 460 theatres nationwide. Since it’s release on Wednesday it’s amassed a total of $21 million!

Aquaman fell two spots to number four adding another $10.3 million to its domestic total. It has crossed the triple century mark here and is now at a robust $304.3 million.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still clinging to the top five, albeit in the last spot. The wall crawlers earned an additional $7.2 million, brining the domestic take to $158.2 million.

The only notable release next week is Attack the Block writer/director Joe Cornish’s family flick The Kid Who Would Be King. I’m thinking Glass will repeat at number one, but I could be wrong. It happens… occasionally.
