COMING TO AMERICA Sequel Happening With Eddie Murphy and HUSTLE & FLOW Director Craig Brewer
Coming To America is one of the best comedies ever made. It was peak Eddie Murphy, and even introduced us a to a very young (and less jaded?) Samuel L. Jackson! Soon, we will be able to visit Prince Akeem again, as Murphy has officially signed on to star in the sequel from Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer.
Deadline reports that Brewer signed on after working with Murphy on Dolamite Is My Name, which is now in post-production. Apparently Murphy had so much fun working with him that he was eager to do it again.
The sequel which better be called Coming 2 America, will focus on Akeem learning of his long lost American son, and has to return to learn about his heir. The original cast consisting of Arsenio Hall, John Amos, Shari Headley, and James Earl Jones are expected to return.
[Editor’s Note: Boo. Coming 2 America? No way. More like Coming Back To America!]
Eddie Murphy had this to say about the sequel, which hopefully starts production this year:
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward. We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
Kenya Barris is rewriting the script originally penned by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield who wrote the first movie. Barris had nothing but nice things to say about Brewer directing.
“Craig’s ability to create a distinct cinematic world with each of his films is not only impressive, but also what made him exactly the voice and vision we needed to bring this story to life. From Hustle & Flow to his work with Eddie on Dolemite Is My Name, he never fails to blow me away. He is a true auteur and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”
This news broke Friday afternoon, and our Editor-In-Chief was quite excited about it.
