SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Characters May Get TV Spinoffs
I entered 2018 knowing for a fact that no superhero movie would be better than Avengers: Infinity War. I was wholeheartedly mistaken. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is far superior. It is not only the best superhero movie of 2018, it is also the best animated film of 2018, and one of the best overall movies of 2018. Period. Lesser movies have spawned many sequels, prequels, and spinoffs, so Sony must be champing at the bit for more Spider-Verse!
Well, of course they are. There is already a sequel and a Spider-Gwen spinoff movie in development. But according to a new report from the New York Times, there may be a television component as well.
Sony is also considering making animated television shows based on characters introduced in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which has collected $276 million at the box office.
That was just dropped nonchalantly in an article about Sony’s Entertainment division. It is interesting, and makes you wonder which of the characters seen in the film would make for a good TV show.
Gwen, Peter, and Miles should all stay cinematic. But Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, and Peni Parker? All perfect for a television series. Spider-Ham would be the best choice – Looney Tunes worked on television for years, for him to be in a world that is similar to that, with big outrageous hammers and anthropomorphic animals, would thrive somewhere like Netflix or Cartoon Network.
They could even go the “shared universe” route. Have all three TV shows happen, then let them crossover into each other’s once a year like the Arrowverse does.
I want – nay – need more Spider-Verse. Whether it is at the movies or on television is irrelevant, as long as the stories are told with the same heart, humor, warmth, and care that the original movie was told with.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I highly recommend it. Don’t let the fact that it is “animated” deter you. It is the superior medium for this story. If you know nothing of Spider-Man, or the other versions of him, that is okay. Still go. This movie will hold your hand in those areas when it needs to. Please see it as soon as possible.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is in theaters everywhere.
