Luke Wilson Joins DC Universe’s STARGIRL Series!

Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Aside from perhaps the upcoming Swamp Thing show, the new live action series I’m most excited to see from the DC Universe streaming service is Stargirl. While I only have a passing knowledge of the character from the comics, my brief run-ins with the character to date have all been rather fun. Awhile back, the series found its titular lead in actress Brec Bassinger. Additionally Joel McHale was cast as Starman last month. Now another role has been filled by a familiar name.

Deadline reports that Luke Wilson (Legally Blonde, The Royal Tenenbaums) has been cast as Pat Dugan, a mechanic-turned-superhero sidekick known as Stripe. The character also happens to be the step-father of series protagonist Courtney Whitmore, who inherits the cosmic staff of Dugan’s old superhero superior Starman and becomes the next generation’s hero Stargirl.

Stargirl’s creator and showrunner Geoff Johns commented on the casting:

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and saw Bottle Rocket, I became a huge fan and admirer of Luke’s. And I literally wrote this part for Luke, hoping that someday and somehow he’d play Pat Dugan. I only envisioned him. And now I feel like I won the lottery! Luke’s talent, humor, compassion — his presence and professionalism — and his creative collaboration, his ideas — we’re so lucky to have him alongside Brec in Stargirl.

As I said before, I’m not too familiar with the lore of Stargirl, but I am a bit of a fan of Owens. As Johns mentioned in his statement, Owens has put in some fantastic work in the past working alongside director Wes Anderson.

Stargirl is set to enter production on February 4th, with a release coming later this year.
