Brad Bird Reveals His Next Project Will Be A Musical/Animation Hybrid
Brad Bird is an interesting filmmaker. Not only did he make one of the best superhero movies of all time (The Incredibles), but he made one of the best Mission: Impossible movies of all time too. Both of those were made after he made what can be called a certified classic – The Iron Giant.
At the BAFTA Tea Party, Brad Bird revealed to Variety what his next project will be.

“I don’t know anything about musicals so I figured I should do this, because I’m deathly afraid of it and that sounds like a cool thing. It’s a project I’ve been wanting to make for a long time, it’s got about 20 minutes of animation in it.”
Bird also reveals that his frequent collaborator Michael Giacchino will do the music. Giacchino is one of the best composers working today, and since this is a wholly original property – not based off of anything existing, Giacchino should have a ton of creative freedom to do what he wants.
It is intriguing that there will be “20 minutes” of animation in it. A mixed media movie can be a ton of fun, especially from someone who has experience with animation, so this is definitely something to look forward to.
Bird was pegged to do an adaptation of James Dalessandro’s novel 1906, but that won’t be for a while now, since he is focusing on this first.
One of the funnest filmmakers to watch, doing things outside of his comfort zone is awesome. The almost-Star-Wars-Episode-VII director had never done a live action movie before Ghost Protocol and that movie was incredible. Before that, he was a staple at Pixar, doing both Ratatouille and The Incredibles. His most recent movie was Incredibles 2 last year, which was a ton of fun as well.
Once we learn more, we will be sure to keep you updated.
