Nicolas Cage Was Set For SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Before Anyone Else
If you haven’t already seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters yet, do yourself a favor and go see that film as soon as you possibly can. Among its many glorious features that our very own MFR previously reviewed last month, the film also features Nicolas Cage voicing a Spider-Man that’s literally from a dimension where it’s the 1930’s and there’s only two colors in the whole world. Obviously Spider-Man Noir isn’t in the main part of the film, but as it turns out, Cage was the first person officially cast for the movie!
Co-director Bob Persichetti revealed recently that Cage signed on to voice Spider-Man Noir in the film over two years ago. He stated, “When looking at who we could approach to play there alternate dimension Spider characters, we thought about seminal actors that also might be comic book geeks. There were so many different casting meetings where a lot of options were put in front of us, but with Spider-Man Noir, we kept coming back to Nicolas Cage and wondering if he could or even would do it.”
Thankfully the film’s producer Christina Steinberg previously worked with Cage on his 2004 film National Treasure and set up a meeting with the actor. Cage was quickly won over by what the team showed him. Persichetti continued, “We showed him some artwork we had created for the film and pitched the character to him and he was immediately in. Noir was a character that spoke to him. And the black and white costume was the icing. He was our first official lead cast because it felt so right. So we actually cast him over two years ago, but he couldn’t tell anyone.”
Needless to say, the wait paid off. I don’t seem to be alone in thinking that Cage was one of the funniest parts of the film, so hopefully we see him return as Spider-Man Noir in the sequel!
