Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN Reboot To Be Properly ‘Dark’ And ‘Ugly’

In case you haven’t heard, comic legend Todd McFarlane is personally directing the latest film adaptation of his iconic character Spawn. A few months ago, the film’s production was pushed back to start filming around June of this year and the creator-turned-director also teased a new design for the 90’s anti-hero character. However while the character’s appearance might be changing, it seems that McFarlane is set on staying true to the tonal origins of his creation.

In a new interview with Nerdist, McFarlane stated, “There’s no joy. There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway. There’s not a lot of funny in them. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time. Of like, ‘Todd, I don’t understand how this works.’ Because he’s not on screen 80% of the time. Right? He’s just the boogeyman.”

“He just sort of appears every now and then,” McFarlane continued. “But I believe with every fiber in my body that not only will it work, I think there’s a hunger for it. Because I would scare you. So I want to do a movie in which there are moments where it just scares you. And you go, ‘Wow, what the heck is going on here?’”

Personally I think McFarlane is on the right track here. A character like Spawn really would benefit more being presented more in of a horror film setting than as a traditional superhero story.
