AQUAMAN Is Now The DCU’s Most Successful Film At The International Box Office!
It’s been a while, but with the ringing of the New Year, it’s safe to say that we’re back! Previously at RTF, James Wan’s Aquaman had just hit theaters in the United States and was projected for a rather big opening at the box office during the holiday weekend. Our very own MFR also reviewed the film, deeming it a “thrill ride.” Needless to say, Aquaman succeeded and outperformed both Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns.
Forbes reports that the film is now the highest grossing DCU film in the international box office, despite performing on the lower end of the box office for DC’s films domestically. The film has reportedly earned somewhere around $575 million internationally, having recently passed the previous record held by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($543 million) and will likely pass Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises ($636 million) before the end of its theatrical run and become the highest grossing DC film ever in the international box office.
Additionally, if the film earns a total of $900 million or higher before the end of its theatrical run as is currently expected, Aquaman will also nudge out Sam Raimi’s 2007 film Spider-Man 3 to join the ranks of the top five superhero movies of all time at the worldwide box office.
Ultimately the big takeaway from this news, at least from where I stand, is that Aquaman, like Wonder Woman before it, has demonstrated that there is absolutely an interest among general audiences for new DC Comics superhero films. If I were a gambling man, I’d wager similar results show when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! hits theaters in a few months’ time.
