VICE Director McKay Throws Name In Hat To Direct A Marvel SILVER SURFER Movie

Read Time:2 Minute, 2 Second

Adam McKay is an interesting guy. While he rose to prominence as the writer-director behind some of Will Ferrell’s raucous comedies like Anchorman and Step Brothers, he’s recently transitioned into political fare like The Big Short and Vice (out in theaters now). But somewhere in there McKay also made a quick detour into the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he rewrote the script for Ant-Man.

So McKay is not one for being pigeonholed and, from the sound of it, he’d gladly to let his geek flag fly a little more if given the chance.

In a recent interview, McKay was asked if he would ever return to the world of comic book movies, and his answer was quite revealing. While he was rumored in the past to be up for the scrapped Inhumans movie, as well as the potential replacement for James Gunn on Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s Silver Surfer that sparks his imagination:

“When I was in the fourth or 5th grade I got into Nova of all people, and I think they’re kicking around a Nova idea now, too. But Silver Surfer man, that’s the one I want to do. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer, because visually that would be just be…You could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer, with the Silver Surfer.”

“At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there man,” McKay said. “Where a guy has to make the choice to save his planet…you know Norrin Rad has to save his planet…that, that would be the one. But I think Fox has the rights to that one…”

And he’s right, of course. As of this moment, Silver Surfer belongs to Fox. But as we all know, Disney has purchased Fox, and so it’s only a matter of time before Marvel Studios has the rights to their X-Men and Fantastic Four properties- the latter of which includes the Surfer.

McKay would be an interesting choice. He’d definitely be an example of thinking outside of the box, as I doubt anyone would think “Yeah, get the guy who wrote Talladega Nights for Silver Surfer.” But considering the range he’s shown so far, I wouldn’t automatically doubt that he could pull it off.
