In the span of a few months, the once mythical Bad Boys For Life has gone from being stuck in development hell to starting production just next month. It was reported not too long ago that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were attached to direct the film with Will Smith returning and shortly afterward Martin Lawerence officially signed on to return for the third film in the franchise. It was also confirmed a few weeks ago that character actor Joe Pantoliano would reprise his role as Captain Howard for the film too. Now we know some of the casting for new characters!
Variety reports that High School Musical alum Vanessa Hudgens, Vikings star Alexander Ludwig and Riverdale‘s Charles Melton have all been cast as “a modern, highly specialized police unit” that comes face-to-face with Smith and Lawrence’s original Bad Boys after a new villain arrives in Miami. The site adds that Smith and Lawrence did a number of chemistry tests with actors for four new roles, three of which went to Hudgens, Ludwig and Melton. The remaining fourth role is reportedly that of the new villain and is “still being sorted out.”
Admittedly I’ve yet to see either of the original two Bad Boys films in full for myself yet. More than anything, I associate the franchise with the clever references Edgar Wright employed in his arguable comedic masterwork Hot Fuzz over a decade ago. That said, I look forward to checking both out at some point and seeing how this latest entry turns out when it arrives in theaters come January 2020.
