Director Travis Knight Reveals There Was A Deleted Megatron Scene For BUMBLEBEE

While most eyes may be focused on James Wan’s Aquaman this weekend, it’s worth remembering that Travis Knight’s Bumblebee is hitting theaters over the holidays too. Aside from reports that the film was based on an idea from executive producer Steven Spielberg, the film is also exciting a number of longtime Transformers fans with its more accurate depiction of the classic 1980’s iteration of the Autobots and Decepticons compared to the designs used in the preceding five Michael Bay films. Unfortunately one of the fan-favorites that won’t be featured in the film is none other than longtime main villain Megatron.

In a new interview with io9, Knight revealed that he originally planned to include a G1 iteration of Megatron in the film’s opening five minutes depicting the fall of Cybertron. He said, “I had this whole thing boarded where we’re where we see [Decepticon leader] Megatron and he comes in like Sauron, just blowing shit up and laying waste to everything.”

Unfortunately, since Bumblebee apparently maintains some level of continuity still with the original five Bay films, Knight realized that he couldn’t include the villain as he was frozen on Earth up until the original 2007 Transformers film in the timeline. He continued, “So even though I really wanted to see G1 Megatron on the battlefield at the fall Cybertron, I couldn’t do it. But I wanted to fit as much of this G1 stuff I loved in there, and so I put my favorite characters in. Obviously there are ones I wish I could put in there, and I would love to see an entire movie about the fall of Cybertron because I think it’s awesome, but just to be able to visit it for a moment, to see the Cybertron of my imaginations on the big screen, it was a real thrill.”

Honestly I would have rather seen Paramount opt to let Knight go with a full reboot in this Bumblebee and be able to include Megatron in that sequence. Sure, that would have ultimately only been fan-service, but it would have been some pretty awesome fan-service at that.
