Steven Spielberg Came Up With The BUMBLEBEE Spinoff Idea

Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

Bumblebee is the first Transformers spinoff of many planned ones. It is also the first Transformers movie not to involve Michael Bay. The reviews that have come out so far, make it sound like Bumblebee is worth seeing – even if you were soured on the last few Transformers movies. According to director Travis Knight, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is the one thought of the idea.

Knight talked to Yahoo about the movie, and said that we have Spielberg to thank for it.

“The original idea for this film actually was Steven [Spielberg’s]. We can thank him for this film even existing.”

Spielberg has executive produced every Transformers movie to date. While he’s never been directly involved in any of the creative decisions – like how many explosions and dangling character threads appear in each film (sorry), he was responsible for the franchise becoming a thing. Bumblebee looks much more manageable, and it looks like it tells a very human story. In other words, Bumblebee looks like it would be right up Spielberg’s alley.

Knight says of the film:

“At heart of it [Bumblebee] is a film about relationships, and this beautiful love story between these two characters,”

Nowadays, anything set in the 80s can’t help but pay tribute to Spielberg. Bumblebee is no different.

“I wanted to pay tribute to some of the movies that meant a lot to me in the 80s, specifically those were those classic Spielberg and coming-of-age movies, those Amblin movies, which always had this beautiful sense of wonder, of laughter, of tears, that really had a deep and strong beating heart at the core of it.”

During the interview, Bumblebee star Hailee Steinfeld even commented that “E.T. was referenced a bit [on set].

This all sounds great for someone like me, who gave up on the franchise about half way through part 2. I was sold on this movie ever since they used the dirty trick of using a voice of Bernie Mac from the first Transformers movie. It was like R2 using his recording of Leia to get Luke back in the fight in The Last Jedi.

I am actually looking forward to a Transformers movie for the first time in a decade.

Bumblebee hits theaters December 24th.
