Amy Adams Backtracks On ‘Being Out of’ The DCU Comments

Read Time:3 Minute, 3 Second

Something I’ve discussed quite a bit this year on Revenge of The Fans is the unique state of flux the cinematic DC universe is in. Following Justice League and the huge changing of the guard that’s happened over at DC Entertainment in the 13 months since that film came out, the studio has spent a lot of time thinking (and rethinking) how it plans to rebound. And a running theme I keep passing along is that things are constantly evolving, sometimes from one day to the next.

Because of that constant evolution, it can be hard to cover where exactly the DCU heading and, from the sounds of it, it’s even hard for the actors involved to keep track of what the plans are. Just last week, we covered how Aquaman star Jason Momoa seems convinced that we haven’t seen the last of Henry Cavill as Superman– this coming mere days after he’d commented that he’d totally get why Cavill and Ben Affleck would be ready to move on from playing Superman and Batman, respectively.

Now there’s a similar turnaround happening when it comes Lois Lane herself, Amy Adams.

The Academy Award-winning actress who’s played Superman’s main squeeze in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League recently expressed thinking her time with DC was now over. Yet in a new interview, the actress claims she was merely speculating when she made those remarks, and that she now thinks she has to chose her words more carefully- learning that fans will take anything she says straight to the bank and possibly cause a panic where there shouldn’t be one.

You know what’s funny? I actually don’t know,” Adams told Den of Geek, when asked to follow up on her remarks about being “out of the DC universe.” “I haven’t had any official conversation with anybody. I was just talking with Nicole Kidman about it, and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I’ve got to be careful what I say!’ But yeah, I haven’t had any word officially.

To be clear, this doesn’t necessarily mean that she expects to reprise the role of Lois Lane. Adams may very well still feel that her time in the role is over. What she’s saying here is merely that she hasn’t gotten any information about that in an official capacity just yet and so, until then, she’ll choose her words more carefully.

Speaking of official statements, the last time Warner Bros. spoke about a Superman movie at all was in September.  At the time, all the studio said was that “no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films.”

So Superman remains in limbo (which you can read my opinions about RIGHT HERE), and therefore, so does Adams’ run as Lois.

It’s hard to read the tea leaves here, and I’m sure many would love to look at Momoa and Adams both somewhat backtracking on “so-and-so is done with DC” comments as proof that the rumored departures of Affleck, Cavill, and Adams herself have now been “debunked,” but it’s important to understand what the two actors have actually said.

Both are on the outside looking in, as they’re just performers; Cogs in a much bigger wheel. And from the sound of it, based off of Adams’ remarks here, they don’t know any more about what the studio’s plans are than we do.

This hopefully explains why there’ve been so many conflicting reports over the last couple of years. It’s like trying to report on the status of a Rubik’s cube while watching someone else trying to solve it.
