One-Time Potential BLACK WIDOW Director Lucrecia Martel Has Harsh Words About Marvel

Read Time:2 Minute, 5 Second

Between nabbing esteemed filmmakers such as Ryan Coogler for Black Panther, Cate Shortland for Black Widow and more recently Chloe Zhao for The Eternals, it would appear that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is searching for more and more idiosyncratic directors to add their stamp to future MCU films. If true, this is exciting as it will further help diversify the giant cinematic universe even beyond Feige’s tried-and-true method of genre-blending from superhero to superhero. As a result of this approach, when a producer searches for the right director for a high profile film, stories will inevitably come out about other filmmakers that didn’t land the gig and lead some fans to wonder “What If?” Here’s the latest example!

In a new article from the Daily Pioneer, acclaimed Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (The Headless Woman, Zama) revealed that she had been approached by Marvel Studios about potentially helming Black Widow. She said, “I received an e-mail from Marvel for a meeting. Because they were looking for directors for ‘Black Widow‘. So I went to the reunion. I actually signed this thing where I can’t talk about that reunion. Marvel and other such production houses are trying to involve more female filmmakers.

Exciting, right? This rising trend of seeing more female directors helm high profile action films or superhero blockbusters is great news for the industry. Well, no. Unfortunately Martel explained that the studio was primarily more interested in having a director “who is mostly concerned with the development of Scarlett Johansson’s character.

They also told me ‘don’t worry about the action scenes, we will take care of that.’ I was thinking, well I would love to meet Scarlett Johansson but also I would love to make the action sequences,” Martel added.

Companies are interested in female filmmakers but they still think action scenes are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects because there’s so many laser lights… I find them horrible. Also the soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it’s really hard to watch a Marvel film. It’s painful to the ears to watch Marvel films.

While Martel was very open about her criticisms towards the MCU model, she added, “But just in case any of this is going to be on YouTube, I would love to make ‘Black Widow‘.
