Alex Kurtzman Explains The Tonal Differences Of Upcoming PICARD Series

Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

Easily the single most exciting news for Star Trek fans this year was the announcement several months back that veteran actor Patrick Stewart would be reprising his role as The Next Generation fan-favorite Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new series. While details about the cast and story remain scarce, it seems likely that the new show will feature a cast of both other Trekkie veterans and newcomers. Rosario Dawson also recently expressed interest in appearing on the new show. That said, there’s a question in the air: Just what kind of show will this new Picard series be exactly?

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman recently revealed a few small nuggets of information on the upcoming show in a new interview with EW. When asked about how the show compares to Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: The Next Generation, he stated, “It’s an extremely different rhythm than Discovery, Discovery is a bullet. Picard is a very contemplative show. It will find a balance between the speed of Discovery and the nature of what Next Gen was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm.

Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in Next Gen is really exciting,” Kurtzman continued. “‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery is also grounded. It will feel more… real-world? If that’s the right way to put it.

Kurtzman also added that the team currently has about eight scripts done so far and are making quick progress, though the date of the series premiere is still unknown.
