Charlie Cox Speaks Out On DAREDEVIL Cancellation

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you probably already knew that Netflix cancelled Daredevil recently. While it was somewhat believable that the Netflix Marvel shows would generally continue to push forward back when the only cancellations were Iron Fist and Luke Cage, but the untimely cancellation of what was Netflix’s fourth biggest show makes it hard to imagine a scenario where Jessica Jones and The Punisher aren’t also on their way out the door at the streaming service. After all, when the show that its own writers thought was “too big to fail” is cancelled, where do you go from there?

In a new interview with EW, the series’ lead star Charlie Cox finally shared his thoughts on the show’s cancellation. Cox said, “A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did. The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that. It’s just how business works.”

“But also, these characters mean a lot to people,” he continued. “It’s weird to think there’s a chance I won’t be playing Matt Murdock ever again. That’s a bizarre feeling, because that character has been such a huge part of my life for the last four and a half years.”

Chances are that it will be sometime before fans know what comes next for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. While Cox very clearly wants to play Daredevil again, he cautioned in the interview that he doesn’t want to “give false hope.”

Personally I’m not sure what should be done with Daredevil moving forward. Other fans, such as my fellow RTF writer Matt Vernier, are hoping that Kevin Feige opts to take this opportunity to incorporate Matt Murdock into the big screen side of the MCU alongside characters like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. While that would be cool, I fear that the politics of whether the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen should be presented on the big screen with a PG-13 or an R-rating might get in the way.
