BLACK PANTHER Nominated For Best Drama At The Golden Globes
Ever since Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther took audiences by storm at the start of 2018, the folks at Disney have spent the year wisely capitalizing on the film’s massive success, from ensuring Coogler’s return for the sequel and even promoting the film for a potential Oscar nomination. While there’s still more waiting left before fans will know whether or not the film is nominated for any awards at the Academy, we do know that the House of Mouse’s hard campaigning efforts are starting to pay off a bit.
The nominations for the 76th Golden Globes were announced recently. Among the lineups, Black Panther has been nominated for both Best Picture – Drama, Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars”). Additionally Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, which our very own MFR has recently reviewed, was also nominated for Best Animated Film.
Typically speaking, the superhero genre as a whole is relatively looked down upon by the crowds involved in the more prestigious annual film award ceremonies. The same can be said for science fiction and fantasy films. After all, it took Peter Jackson three tries before he was properly awarded for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards in 2004 for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
The tides are starting to change a bit, dating back to the late Heath Ledger’s jaw-dropping performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight back in 2008 and last year’s Logan. I’m reminded a bit from a moment in Stephen King’s horror epic IT, where one of his heroes scoffs back at his professor’s complaint about his short stories just being ‘pulp’ and proudly proclaims something along the lines of “Fine, then let it be pulp!”
I’m not entirely sure if Black Panther is quite high enough to garner that sort of respect and praise, but I love that the prestigious film critics circle are starting to pay more heed to genre storytelling. Sure, you might find it to be pulp, but maybe it’s some of the best pulp you’ll ever find and has its own worthwhile meaning.
