In case you’ve missed it, we here at Revenge of the Fans tend to be fond of James Wan’s Conjuring Cinematic Universe. Our very own MFR wrote back in October about his conflicted emotions over Wan handing over the reins of The Conjuring 3 to newcomer Michael Chaves, but grew optimistic after seeing the teaser trailer for Chaves’ upcoming film The Curse of La Llorona. We also learned not too long ago that fans of the first two main films can expect to see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmigna reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren in next year’s Annabelle 3, before the duo return to star in the third Conjuring film.
In a new interview with Digital Spy, Wilson simply teased, “Oh boy. We just finished Annabelle 3 which is cool. It’s nice to dip our toes into that franchise a little bit. Conjuring 3 will be different than anything we’ve seen, which is fun.” The site also added that Wan told them that his decision to pass the Conjuring torch over to Chaves was born out of a personal need for exploring new ground.
“I’m always constantly trying to find stuff that would challenge me as a filmmaker and I don’t linger in that one space for too long. Even though I’ve done a bunch of horror movies, all my horror movies are slightly different to each other,” Wan elaborated.
This actually reminds me a little bit of the changes that the Resident Evil games underwent over time. Personally I believe that if The Conjuring is going to ultimately succeed as a longterm horror cinematic universe, Wan and the other filmmakers involved need to diversify the types of horror at play and what sort of plot set-ups are utilized from film to film.
