I, TONYA’s Craig Gillespie To Direct Disney’s CRUELLA Starring Emma Stone

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

One of the first live action remakes that Disney ever did of their own property was 101 Dalmations starring Glenn Close in 1996. Now they have a ton of live action prequels, remakes and sequels of their animated properties coming. Dalmations isn’t missing out, as Disney is developing a prequel, tentatively titled Cruella.

Deadline reports that Emma Stone is set to star in the titular role as the “Cruel Devil” herself, Cruella de Vil. (creative name, eh?) with I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie at the helm. Gillespie is replacing Alex Timbers, who couldn’t make it work due to scheduling issues. The Mozart In The Jungle co-creator needed to wait, but Disney needed to start pre-production immediately. That means the movie is set to shoot some time next year.

There have been 2 live action movies with the character already. 101 Dalmations in 1996 and 102 Dalmations in 2000. There is no word on whether this prequel will relate directly to those, or have no connection other than the source material.

Of course, most people will be familiar with the animated classic from 1961. That itself spawned a direct to video sequel in 2002.

It seems that no Disney property is safe from a remake or adaptation. But Cruella seems to be going the way of the Malificent movies – tell stories about an otherwise 1 dimensional villain.

Between Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and The Tramp, Dumbo, and The Little Mermaid, Disney has their plate full with redoing existing properties. But Disney is better at printing money than anyone else, so I’m sure Cruella will be something that fans of the franchise will love.

Deadline doesn’t mention if this is a theatrical release or not. There is a chance that this is being made for the Disney + App, depending on the budget. It is rumored that Lady and The Tramp will debut there, so it is not unprecedented.

That is all that is known about Cruella right now. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on future developments.
