MAZE RUNNER Star Dylan O’Brien Is The Voice of BUMBLEBEE!

It’s officially December! As 2018 draws to a close, moviegoers have one last wave of exciting blockbusters hitting theaters over Winter Break. Superhero fans are giddy to see Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse and James Wan’s Aquaman, while parents will likely take their children to go see Mary Poppins Returns. Yet there’s one other blockbuster set to hit the box office during that busy timeframe- Travis Knight’s Bumblebee. For the first time since the live action Transformers franchise started eleven years, someone other than Michael Bay is in charge behind the camera and the trailers released so far are surprisingly quite promising.

Even more surprising though is that we now know that our titular Autobot hero will actually speak at some point in the film! Despite typically being portrayed as a mute, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed to IGN recently that audiences will hear Dylan O’Brien as the voice of Bumblebee in the coming weeks.

Di Bonaventura stated, “Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice. That’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.

I’m rather intrigued by di Bonaventura’s comment on how they are “resetting the mythology” for this film, since we’ve known for awhile now that Transformers was set to get a full reboot soon, although Bumblebee was originally intended to act as the finale for Bay’s set of films. It sounds like the studio knows they’ve got a winner on their hands and are hoping to use Bumblebee as the starting point for the new canon. Hopefully that pays off, as I quite adore the shades of Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant shown off in the trailers.
