Marvel Hires WONDER WOMAN 1984 Writer To Develop A Fast-Tracked SHANG-CHI Film!

Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second

This is shaping up to be a very exciting week for Marvel Studios! A new poster and full trailer for Captain Marvel have already made their way to the internet, with whispers that the first teasers for the fourth Avengers film and Spider-Man: Far From Home are also looming on the horizon. On top of all of that though is a report of a new film in the works: Shang-Chi!

Deadline reports that the studio is currently fast tracking a Shang-Chi solo film, which will be the first MCU film to star an Asian protagonist. While no director is attached to the film yet, Chinese-American screenwriter Dave Callaham is set to write the film. The site adds that the studio is currently on the hunt for Asian or Asian-American directors, hoping to snag some top talent interested in creating a culturally relevant blockbuster on par with Black Panther– a film that could be up for a Best Picture Academy Award.

Admittedly I know nothing about Shang-Chi as a character, so I had to look him up, and I figured I’d share my findings in case you’re like me. According to WikiPedia, he’s a Kung Fu Master, and his main power is the ability to duplicate himself. He’s had some strong ties to Spider-Man, the Heroes for Hire, and was even once an Avenger. So there are some serious options for where they can go with him, and that’s exciting.

I’ve written in previous articles here at Revenge of the Fans about the importance of diversity on film, especially in superhero films, so any news about more diversity on the big screen is music to my ears. Not to mention Callaham’s credentials. He’s already co-written Wonder Woman 1984 with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns and was also recently picked to write the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!

What do you think? Are you excited to see a Shang-Chi solo film in the MCU? Be sure to leave your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
