Director Rupert Wyatt Departs From Showtime’s Upcoming HALO Series
In case you’re like me and never bothered much to follow the video game monster franchise known as Halo, it was reported earlier this year that Showtime is working on a new TV series based on the games. While the show reportedly will tell a new tale in the canon, rather than adapt one of the games onto the small screen, fans of the game can be rest assured that series protagonist Master Chief will be included in the show. Unfortunately, though, the show has hit a bit of a bump in the road.
Showtime announced recently that Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt has been forced to depart from his duties as a director and executive producer on the show due to scheduling conflicts brought about by a recent delay. Wyatt stated, “It’s with great disappointment that changes to the production schedule of ‘Halo’ prevent me from continuing in my role as a director on the series. My time on ‘Halo’ has been a creatively rich and rewarding experience with a phenomenal team of people. I now join the legion of fans out there, excited to see the finished series and wishing everyone involved the very best.”
“Showtime’s adaptation of ‘Halo’ is evolving beautifully with rich characters, compelling stories and powerful scripts,” added Showtime’s president of programming Gary Levine. “Obviously, the production demands of this series are enormous, and we have had to add time to the schedule in order to do it right. Sadly, this delay has created a conflict for Rupert, whom we warmly thank for all he has brought to the project.”
This is definitely unfortunate news. While I’m not a huge Halo fan and haven’t been following news on this upcoming series much myself, I quite liked Wyatt’s work on his Planet of the Apes film and can definitely see the potential of adapting Halo to film or television. Hopefully Showtime is able to bounce back from this.
