Warner Bros Developing BLUE BEETLE With SCARFACE Scribe Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer

It seems like every other week we have a new announcement or rumor of another superhero to have a film in development. Now The Wrap is reporting a Latino teen superhero Blue Beetle movie is in development with Universal’s Scarface reboot writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. If Blue Beetle gets made, this would become the first Latino superhero in the current age of superhero blockbusters, as Sony’s Zorro has not been seen in more than a decade at this point.

Dunnet-Alcocer’s most recent project is Universal’s reboot of Scarface, and a Miss Bala remake for Sony. Warner Bros’ move in tapping a scribe with Mexican roots, is a smart decision by the studio in the same fashion as Patty Jenkins for Wonder Woman and Cathy Yan for Birds of Prey.

Blue Beetle is a legacy character for DC Comics that was introduced during the Infinite Crisis run when he discovered a long-lost scarab previously held by his predecessor’s predecessor. Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle is the third character to claim the hero’s name after the death of Ted Kord at the hands of Max Lord, who we may or may not see portrayed by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984. A live action Blue Beetle film will mark the character’s second live action debut, after his first appearance alongside Booster Gold in Smallville during its final season with the episode penned by Geoff Johns.

As a Latino myself, the development of a Blue Beetle project is quite interesting, Jaime Reyes is a fun, energetic and reluctant hero that can easily resonate with audiences through his charm, unexpected journey and questionable relationship with the Scarab. Like the recent Venom film, the Scarab merges with Jaime Reyes and offers internal interaction between the two. For my liking, however, Ted Kord is the Beetle I would like to see on screen.

Development of the project is not entirely surprising, after countless seasons of CW’s Arrow teasing his existence through “Kord Industries” and the subtle name drop. Arrow producer’s even intended on bringing him in as a series regular for Season 3 before being given a road block and offered the character of the Atom instead who is still seen in the Arrowverse today on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
