Dreams Do Come True: We’re Getting A BLADE RUNNER Anime Series!!!

Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was hands down my favorite film of 2017. While Villeneuve wisely opted to keep the central story focused around Officer K’s ongoing investigation and personal journey, the sequel film helped expand upon the iconic cyberpunk world that was created by Ridley Scott’s original classic. As a result of that, it was hard to walk away from the theater last year and not think that we would be seeing more stories set in that world in due time, even if it wasn’t necessarily another live action blockbuster film. That time has arrived.

Adult Swim, Crunchyroll and Alcon Television Group have announced an upcoming anime spinoff series titled Blade Runner – Black Lotus. It will be a thirteen episode long series inspired by Blade Runner 2049, set in the year 2032 right in-between the events of the original and 2049. While we also know that some previously familiar characters will appear in the show, little else is known yet about the show’s story.

Jason DeMarco, senior vp/creative director of Adult Swim on-air, stated, “I first saw Blade Runner in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life. To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.

Even more exciting is that the legendary Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop fame will act as a creative producer on the show. Watanabe previously wrote and directed the anime short film Blade Runner Black Out 2022 as part of the promotional campaign for 2049 last year. The upcoming Ghost in the Shell reboot’s Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama will direct all of the episodes, with animation studio Sola Digital Arts producing the show.

If this show is anything like the quality shown in Black Out 2022 or 2049, I think Blade Runner – Black Lotus will make quite a big splash among anime and sci-fi fans when it comes out.
