First Trailer For Jon Favreau’s THE LION KING Does Insane Numbers

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

Let it be known that Walt Disney Studios are going to make ridiculous amounts of money in 2019. Aside from the fourth Avengers film, Star Wars: Episode IX, Frozen 2 and the multiple other blockbusters on their schedule, Jon Favreau’s remake of The Lion King is finally on its way. I’m not going to argue whether it was the best film of the Disney Renaissance, as I personally prefer Beauty and the Beast, but it’s impossible to argue against the sheer cultural impact this particular entry in the Disney vault has had for the past twenty-plus years.

Needless to say, the first official teaser for the film hit the Internet over Thanksgiving Weekend a few days ago and quickly took the Internet by storm. While the trailer didn’t quite beat out the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War‘s debut 238 million views, The Lion King did come in at a relatively close second place with 224 million views in its first 24 hours of release and usurping the spot from IT‘s previous 197 million views.

You can view it right here:

Obviously the trailer itself is immediately familiar to anyone who’s ever seen the original animated film. A multitude of iconic shots from the original are recreated with impressive accuracy while James Earl Jones offers up a velvety reading of Mufasa’s “Everything the light touches” speech. The trailer then leads into those far-too-memorable opening lines of ‘Circle of Life’ while showing off Favreau’s take on Simba’s coronation ceremony at Pride Rock, before bringing it all home with a very confident listing of the remake’s all-star cast and capping it off with a quick glimpse at a grown up Simba ascending the throne.

I have no idea how great this film will ultimately be. I have faith in Favreau’s ability to deliver here and its hard not to feel the sheer confidence Disney seems to have in this particular retelling from the trailer. Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if The Lion King ends up being the highest grossing film of 2019.
