Box Office: FANTASTIC BEASTS Finds Its Way To The Top Spot!

I thought maybe interest in J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World was waning, and while it opened about 8% below the first film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald easily took the top spot domestically with $62,200,000; however, the really impressive number is Fantastic Beasts‘ worldwide opening of $253,200,000! Clearly, this franchise is still going strong and shows little signs of slowing down.

Falling one spot to number two is Dr Seuss’ The Grinch. Dropping an impressively mild 43.5%, it earned a whopping $38,165,000 in its sophomore weekend. It’s now at $126,544,280 domestic.

If I may paraphrase Queen, “Don’t stop the fans of Bohemian Rhapsody because they’re having a good time!” The rock ‘n roll biopic fell a respectable 49.7% to take third place with $15.7million, bringing its domestic total to $127.8 million.

Mark Wahlberg’s latest attempt at comedy, Instant Family, only managed $14.7 million in its opening weekend, which places it fourth overall. Don’t fret, Mr Wahlberg, those who did turn up at the theatre gave your film an A- Cinemascore, so maybe this one will have legs and carry on throughout the holiday season.

Steve McQueen’s Widows opened in fifth place with $12.3 million. Despite rave reviews from the critics, audiences just didn’t show up for this one.

This week Robin Hood, Creed II, and Ralph Breaks the Internet, will all vie for the top spot. Ralph should easily take the weekend, with Creed II most liking doing respectable numbers. Robin Hood will most likely tank. I don’t like to review a movie before I see it, but Hood is throwing some wicked King Arthur: Legend of the Sword vibes. So, while I won’t say Hood is a bad film before I see it, I will say the prognoses doesn’t look great.
