Simon Pegg Now Thinks New STAR WARS Films Miss George Lucas’ Voice and Vision
Star Trek’s Scotty has had his fair share of commentary on previous Star Wars films, now the actor has seemingly opposed his previous opinion of the new trilogy and George Lucas while stirring up fans of the franchise in the process.
Here’s what he said on the matter while appearing on the Adam Buxton Podcast:
“I must admit, watching the last Star Wars film [THE LAST JEDI] the overriding feeling I got when I came out was, ‘I miss George Lucas.’ For all the complaining that I’d done about him in the prequels, there was something amazing about his imagination. I do feel like his voice is missing from the current ones.”
Pegg’s current comments surely contradict his opinion of the franchise in the past were he consistently voiced his dislike of the direction for the prequel trilogy and Jar Jar Binks in specific, versus the collaboration and higher standard he felt the original trilogy embodied. I think up until prior to The Last Jedi, most fans would have agreed with his previous sentiments, but in a landscape where The Last Jedi is a year removed from its release, his sentiments are easily echoed by many.
Likely the only actor that has starred in both Star Wars and Star Trek, Pegg is no stranger to the creative and collaborative process of filmmaking. As a writer on the latter’s franchise, as well as this past summer’s hit Mission Impossible: Fallout, Pegg is one of those rare actor/writers who brings an additional layer of creativity to the filmmaking experience.
The Last Jedi remains one of the most divisive modern films to date, however, the need for Lucas’ inclusion may be going a step too far, as he himself made divisive decisions that remain the topic of conversations today. Are fans jaded by the franchise for the same reasons as Pegg, or did fans go into The Last Jedi expecting the film to play out the way they wanted to, and it didn’t? Check out MFR discuss that very notion with Zaki Hasan on this week’s Fanboy Podcast.
