Lily James (And Some Guy) To Star In Adaptation Of Gothic Novel REBECCA

Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

Rebecca is a famous novel. So famous in fact, that the legendary Alfred Hitchcock made a movie adaptation of it 1940. The movie won best picture.

But this is 2018. Remakes are all the rage. There are a lot of remakes coming, and Rebecca is next in line. Variety reports that Ben Wheatley will direct the film for Netflix, starring Lily James and the tone-deaf Armie Hammer who is jealous that he didn’t get a picture with Stan Lee.

Wheatley, who directed Peter Capaldi’s first episode of Doctor Who, also did Free Fire (a movie that you should see if you haven’t yet) which starred Hammer.

For those unfamiliar with the plot, Variety has a synopsis:

“The story follows a newly married young woman who, upon arriving at her husband’s imposing family estate on a bleak English coast, finds herself battling the shadow of his deceased first wife, the mysterious Rebecca, whose legacy continues to haunt the house.”

James (who we suggested should be Supergirl), is an incredible screen presence. Even in small, standard films like Netflix’s The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society (worth a view for the title alone), she is the most interesting one on screen at all time. Most people will know her from Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver.

Hammer has been doing some great work recently as well. He is much better at performing in such projects as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Call Me By Your Name, and Sorry To Bother You, than he is at tweeting about a legend who just passed away. (I can’t let it go).

The gap (1940-Present Day) is much more acceptable than some reboots. We’ve had 3 different Spider-Man franchises in the last 18 years for example. The novel Rebecca has never been out of print, and one of the most legendary directors of all time directed the an Oscar-Worthy adaptation. Wheatley has big shoes to fill. It’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out.
