Redmayne Really Wants This HARRY POTTER Character In A Future FANTASTIC BEASTS Film

Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

If there’s one thing about prequels that I don’t care for, it’s how commonly these stories over-explain everything. Or how prequels often try to over-connect everything together in a way that was clearly never intended when the story was first told. There’s a nervousness that comes with the story type and it’s not hard at all to fall into these trappings. After all, the ideas can be exciting to people.

For instance, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne revealed that there’s a certain classic Harry Potter character he wants to see appear in the prequel series at some point. He stated, “Hagrid. And I’m secretly hoping that at some wonderful point, maybe if I say it enough times to J.K. Rowling, like a little mini Hagrid might arrive.

He’s not the only cast member who wants to see Hagrid back on the big screen. Co-star Katherine Waterson weighed in, “In the timeline, he could be a kid… I think it could work!

As the site notes though, the only way that idea could work is if J.K. Rowling breaks from existing canon as the latest film The Crimes of Grindelwald takes place a whole year before Hagrid was born in the original novels. That’s not unheard of, as retcons happen all the time in prequels. But just because you can do something, it doesn’t always mean that you should do it either.

I don’t know. I’ve been a bit of a grouch for most things Harry Potter-related for the past seven or so years, so perhaps I’m just a bit too biased here, but I think Fantastic Beasts would be better served as acting more like its own story in the Wizarding World and not a full on prequel to the original Potter books.
