Sigourney Weaver Won’t Rule Out Blomkamp’s ALIEN 5, Offers AVATAR Update

Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

Sigourney Weaver is a legend in geek circles. She starred in Ghostbusters, and more famously played Ripley in the Alien franchise. Weaver also was in a movie called Avatar once upon a time. Now, she’s busy with that again, and doesn’t rule out returning to another franchise.

There are a ton of Avatar sequels coming, and two of them have already wrapped filming. When asked whether Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 could ever happen, Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter that she won’t rule anything out, but that she’s currently working on the latter two Avatars.

“We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably. I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once.”

While it doesn’t seem likely, Weaver won’t rule it out completely. It should also be noted that Blomkamp’s Alien sequel is also thought to have been shelved because of the box office performances of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.

Weaver also says she working on Avatar 4 and 5 right now, having already completed work on 2 and 3, and that’s notable because- at this rate- it would mean that all four sequels will have been completed by the time the first of them arrives on December 18, 2020.

The first Alien movie is one of the best horror movies ever made. The sequel, from Avatar director James Cameron, is one of the best action movies ever made. After that? Well, we don’t need to talk about it. But a Legacy-quel, that retcons the franchise, like Halloween did or the upcoming Terminator (another James Cameron franchise) will do, can absolutely work. Blomkamp’s take was said to be exactly that, and that it would serve as “the real Alien 3.”

As for Avatar, that franchise is continuing with a vengeance. While the original wasn’t big on story, the visuals it provided are some of the best in the industry. In that sense, the bar will be set very high.

While I’d much rather have Weaver return to the Alien franchise, Avatar finally getting the sequels they’ve teased is huge. It’s great that Weaver is still this in demand. She deserves it.
