Disney Looking At A PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Reboot With DEADPOOL Writers!

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

We’ve known for awhile now that Disney were chomping at the bit to make another Pirates of the Caribbean film. However it appears that there have been recent developments behind-the-scenes and now their previous plans of teaming up again with director Joachim Ronning and the writers of Dead Men Tell No Tales have apparently been ejected. Instead, it would appear that the House of Mouse now want a clean slate with the franchise.

Deadline reports that the studio is now “exploring a reboot” of the series and have been in early negotiations with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about penning the new film. Meanwhile Jerry Bruckheimer will continue his association with the franchise producing the new film, although Deadline adds that it’s “too early to say” whether anyone else previously involved with the franchise will return for the reboot- including actor Johnny Depp.

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, the series has needed to move beyond Captain Jack Sparrow for ages now. As iconic as Depp’s performance in the first film was, the character isn’t really ‘built’ for the main protagonist role of a series. Sparrow worked in Curse of the Black Pearl because he was a side-character. He was important to the plot, yes, but he also had the freedom to steal scenes away from the other cast because he was the comedy relief in a film otherwise grounded in adventure and moments of maritime horror.

On the other hand, Disney seems to be interested in continuing to further lean into the franchise’s comedic side, judging by the screenwriters they’re negotiating with to write this reboot. That isn’t to say a more comedic take can’t work, but unless Reese and Wernick opt for a clean break and do something drastically different in their comedic approach, I’m struggling to picture how this new film won’t turn out like the past two Pirates films.

What do you think though? Be sure to leave your thoughts below!
