Box Office: VENOM Repeats at Number One!

The big story this week is once again our number two films. None of the new releases were able to even come close to unseating last week’s winners.

Venom took the number one spot for the second weekend in a row with $35.7 million. That’s a decline of around 55.5% from last weekend. It seems like a lot, but it’s right in line for a film that was expected to be front loaded with a big opening, as super hero films usually are. So far Venom has grossed an impressive $142.8 million domestically. Look for it to finish around $240 to $250 million.

A Star is Born is in second place again with a sophomore weekend take of $28 million and a decline of only $34.7 million from last weekend. That puts the Oscar hopeful at $94.1 million with plenty more to come. Unlike Venom, Star is playing to an older audience. That’s a group that doesn’t feel a need to rush out to the multiplex on opening weekend. In other words, this film will have legs and continue to make money for a while. Expect it to break through the $100 million mark by Tuesday.

Debuting at number three is writer/director Damien Chazelle’s First Man. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Stanley Kubrick and tells the story of how Kubrick helped NASA and the US government fake the Apollo moon landing… I wish. Gosling actually plays Neil Armstrong, and First Man tells the story of NASA’s Apollo 11 space mission and Armstrong’s voyage to become the first man to walk on the moon. Personally I think the Kubrick story makes a better movie… At any rate, First Man opened to $16.5 million.

Goosebumps 2: The Haunted Halloween opened in the number four spot with $16.2 million. The first Goosebumps movie opened at number one in 2015 with $23.6 million and went on to earn $80 million domestically. I don’t think the sequel will get close to that, but with a relatively low budget, $35 million, Goosebumps 2 doesn’t have a long road to profitability.

The animated Smallfoot dropped two spots to number five and brought in another $9.3 million bringing the domestic total to $57.6 million.

Bad Times at the El Royale opened outside the top five at number seven with $7.2 million. Not exactly a great opening, but this feels like the type of film that was always going to be more of a cult hit with a long life in home video.

I don’t think Venom will be able to fend off Michael Meyers next week when the new Halloween flick opens. The reboot/sequel is expected to do about $40 million.

Let’s set the over/under on Halloween at $40 million. Personally, with the buzz it’s been building up, and the time of year, I think people are ready for another good horror film, and I see this opening north of $40 million. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
