DC Entertainment Confirms James Gunn Is Writing SUICIDE SQUAD 2
Well, that didn’t take very long! Earlier this week, the trades reported that MCU veteran writer-director James Gunn had been hired by Warner Bros to write the new script for Suicide Squad 2 and may also wind up directing the film too. Now DC Entertainment has come forward to directly confirm and welcome Gunn into the DC family via the latest episode of DC Daily.
While the episode didn’t confirm whether or not Gunn will direct the film, it isn’t a surprise to see Warner Bros. making the most of the moment and hyping up Gunn’s entry into his previously “rival superhero movie franchise.” While the higher ups at Disney may understandably have had reason to fire Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, as well as stand firm on their decision following fans demanding his return, the controversy surrounding Gunn isn’t nearly as much of a priority to Warner Bros and other big studios. Plus the aforementioned outcry of support from fans online demonstrated that Gunn remains a big get to other studios.
However one small detail that was seemingly confirmed in DC Daily’s announcement is that Gunn’s take on the Suicide Squad will more or less be something of a clean slate from its 2016 predecessor.
As host Tiffany Smith stated on the show:
“It’s official that we have got a new member of the DC family: acclaimed writer/director James Gunn has been attached to write Suicide Squad 2. Gunn is poised to bring a completely fresh take to the franchise after the first film was written and directed by David Ayer.”
My guess is that we will see Viola Davis, Will Smith and probably Margot Robbie all return from the first film and be surrounded by a new team of super-villains working together for the greater good. While I could also see Joel Kinnaman return as Rick Flag too, I actually think it would make for a neat opportunity if Gunn and the folks at DC took inspiration from the old fan theory leading up to the first film that one of the Special Forces officers keeping the Squad in check was actually Dick Grayson in disguise.
It’s just a thought though!
