Brian Tyree Henry To Co-Star In GODZILLA VS. KONG
While Monsterverse fans are still waiting to see Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters first, some exciting news has come out about the similarly anticipated 2020 followup Godzilla vs. Kong. According to Variety, Brian Tyree Henry of Atlanta fame is set to co-star alongside Stranger Things star Millie Bobbie Brown in the Adam Wingard-helmed kaiju showdown.
Variety reports that “plot details are vague, but the film will feature the two titular classic monsters squaring off in some form. Details behind who Henry is playing are currently unknown, other than the fact that it will be a significant role.” Meanwhile Brown’s character will first debut in the Monsterverse next year in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and return the following year for Godzilla vs. Kong.
The Monsterverse is a bit of an oddity among the multiple Hollywood cinematic universes we’ve seen emerge over the past decade. Despite premiering four and a half years ago already, Legendary Pictures have generally taken their time with each entry. Kong: Skull Island came out a year and a half ago and to date we only know of the two aforementioned upcoming entries. Is the studio planning on wrapping it up after Godzilla and King Kong go toe-to-toe in 2020? If so, the plan reminds me a bit of how we’ve recently learned that Zack Snyder’s original vision for the DCU was that of a short-term franchise comprised of a handful of films, wrapping up with a second Justice League film and Batman dying.
That said, I think a short-term plan could actually wind up working in the Monsterverse‘s favor. After all, kaiju films are tricky to do right because their main characters are rarely the titular monsters. Instead they’re about the various people witnessing the monster’s destruction and what choices they make in responding to the chaos. Toho has actually rebooted Godzilla multiple times over the decades in order to help put a fresh spin on the creature and adapt to the new eras.
Plus I’d love to see Godzilla vs. Kong culminate in Destroyah appearing at the end…
