KRAVEN THE HUNTER Screenwriter Provides An Exciting Update
While I’m still not particularly convinced on Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, the apparent financial success of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom all but ensures that the studio’s plans for more films will continue. And while the Jared Leto-starring Morbius is next on Sony’s slate, the film we’re here to talk about today is Kraven the Hunter. While no actor or director has signed on yet to the film, screenwriter Richard Wenk provided an update.
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Wenk mentioned that he was still “just beginning the process” of writing the film and discussed his appreciation for how “grounded” Kraven was as a character, noting that “he doesn’t have a lot of crazy super powers.” However he added two other potentially exciting details about Kraven the Hunter.
Firstly, Wenk claims that Kraven will “come face-to-face with Spider-Man” in the film. Presumably Wenk is referring to Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character that fans are now regularly seeing in the MCU, due to the ongoing agreement that Sony and Marvel Studios have with one another over the character.
The second bit of news is arguably even more exciting. When asked about potential stories he was looking at for influence for the film, Wenk answered that he was still “soaking in” stories, but added that the film will “adhere very closely to the lore of Kraven the Hunter.” Despite that, Wenk added, “What we’re all circling is the infamous ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt.’ Whether this is the precursor for that movie, whether we’ll include it… we’re talking about that.”
For anyone who isn’t familiar, Kraven’s Last Hunt is widely considered to be one of the best storylines in Spider-Man history. Tonally speaking, it probably has a bit more in common with a lot of classic Batman storylines than Spider-Man, but it’s an epic storyline featuring several iconic moments- including the image of Spider-Man climbing his way out of a grave in the middle of a rainy night.
