Sony Bumps James Gunn’s BRIGHTBURN To May 2019
It’s been a couple of months since Disney remained firm on their decision to fire director James Gunn from helming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While most fans have understandably had their sights focused on the fallout and search for the new director of that film, there has been another semi-related project in the periphery being affected by the controversy surrounding Gunn as well- BrightBurn, a Sony Pictures film that is being produced by Gunn and directed by The Hive filmmaker David Yarovesky.
News hit the Internet yesterday that Sony Pictures has decided to push back the release date of BrightBurn from its original date on November 30th to May 24th, 2019. Now the film will face a competitive weekend at the box office next year against Guy Ritchie’s remake of Aladdin for Disney and two other films from Warner Bros and Fox.
Sony has been very secretive about the film up until now and were forced to cancel a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2018 back in July right as the scandal with Gunn first erupted. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for the studio to push back BrightBurn‘s release date so that they can give themselves more time for the controversy surrounding Gunn to further die down in the event he decides to participate in publicly promoting the film upon release. Moreover, the new release date offers the studio a chance to more thoroughly promote the film moving forward.
