STAR WARS: First Official Image Of THE MANDALORIAN Is Here, And Who’s Directing The Series?

Read Time:1 Minute, 58 Second

Things are seriously heating up as Jon Favreau’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian prepares to begin principal photography. Earlier this week we found out the show’s title and central premise, we also got some rumors, and today we’ve gotten some confirmations, as well as a sweet new official image of the series’ main character- who may or may not be played by Pedro Pascal!

First, feast your eyes on the official image Lucasfilm just released for The Mandalorian:

Pretty sweet, right?

But that’s not all we have the pleasure of sharing with you today, as some rumors about who would be directing the series have now been confirmed. First, we heard Dave Filoni- a veteran of the animated wing of the Star Wars canon- may be directing an episode, and now we know that to be true. In fact, he’s directing the very first episode of The Mandalorian. We also heard that there’d be “a female director,” and now we know that there are two of them: Bryce Dallas Howard and Deborah Chow! And we also heard whispers of “an MCU director,” and guess what? That would be Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi!

Also, demonstrating that producer Jon Favreau has his finger on the pulse for who the most exciting up-and-coming directors are, he’s also tapped Dope‘s Rick Famuyiwa to direct. Famuyiwa is perhaps best known for a project he didn’t direct, and that would be The Flash. He was hired to direct that DC film after Seth Grahame-Smith bailed on it, only to end up bailing as well. Looks like he’ll now have his chance to show the geeks of the world what he’s got up his sleeve, and he’ll do so in the Star Wars galaxy!

These are very exciting times for fans who’ve longed for a live-action Star Wars series. It’s a concept we’ve all heard about for years, going back to when news broke that George Lucas was developing one himself many moons ago. While that never came to fruition, the prospect of one being overseen by Jon Favreau- a filmmaker who’s had phenomenal success across several genres, with films like Iron Man, Chef, The Jungle Book, and Elf– has to count as quite a consolation prize.

The Mandalorian will air exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, currently known only as Play.
