NEW MUTANTS Reshoots Haven’t Happened Yet, Film Could End Up Rated R

Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

Earlier this year we were set to get New Mutants, however, a month prior to its release, official word from Fox was a 15-month delay for the release of the film. The delay was reportedly to make this film a full-fledged horror film as director Josh Boone originally had intended, and after the success of Deadpool and horror genre films like It, the studio decided to delay New Mutants. Now, after X-Men: Dark Phoenix director and New Mutants producer Simon Kinberg has revealed that the aforementioned reshoots have yet to take place, and that the studio is not married to the idea of the film being PG-13, with the only “mandate” being, “Let’s see what Boone turns in, then decide.”

Here’s what Kinberg told Collider about New Mutants:

“It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating… Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie.”

After previous delays, speculation ran rampant over the quality of New Mutants and studio meddling, but Kinberg’s remarks along with previous comments by one of the film’s stars, puts those concerns to rest. Fox has recently found great success with the R-Rated approach, with both Deadpool films and Logan, the studio feels the confidence of venturing into R territory instead of the PG-13 approach we have come to expect from these films.

New Mutants may also be one of the final three X-Men films released under the Fox banner before the Disney merger. With the merger eminent, Fox currently has two set for release, and 1-3 films in some level of production which may or may not see the light of day. X-Men: Dark Phoenix for June 7, 2019 and New Mutants for August 2, 2019 should see their respective release dates, but with films like Gambit, X-Force, Tim Miller’s Kitty Pryde, or Deadpool 3 in constant uncertainty because of the looming merher, New Mutants may be the last Fox X-Men film.

Are you excited for New Mutants? Do you want more Fox X-Men films? Or are you just counting the days for all X-Men characters to make their way back to Disney? Let us know your thoughts in the section below.
