BIRDS OF PREY: Rosie Perez Will Play Renee Montoya

Read Time:1 Minute, 41 Second

Casting is shaping up for Harley Quinn’s female team up movie Birds of Prey. It was recently announced that Jurnee Smollett-Bell would play Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast as Huntress. Now Rosie Perez has joined that group, bringing Renee Montoya to life. The Wrap was first to report this.

For those that don’t know, Renee Montoya is an openly gay police officer working for the Gotham City PD. In some instances of the comics, she even suits up as a vigilante and becomes The Question. Wikipedia has more details:

Renee Maria Montoya is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was initially created for Batman: The Animated Series, and was preemptively introduced into mainstream comics before the airing of her animated debut in 1992.

The character has developed significantly over the years. Renee Montoya is initially a detective from the Gotham City Police Department, assigned to the Major Crimes Unit who comes into frequent contact with the masked vigilante, Batman. Over the course of her comic book history, Renee is outed as a lesbian, and later resigns from the police force, disgusted by its corruption. After being trained by the first man to bear the name, Montoya has operated as the Question out of a lighthouse she shares with Aristotle Rodor on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Perez is an Academy Award nominated actress, having been nominated for the prestigious award for her work in Fearless in 1993.

For the movie to nab a talent like this is awesome. There will be a point where every working actor has been in some sort of comic book property.

Margot Robbie is reprising her role as Harley Quinn for the movie. Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan, and the script is written by Christina Hodson, who is also penning the standalone Batgirl movie.

DC has had some inspired casting as of late, and I can’t wait to see who they get next!
