Producer Frank Marshall Talks Making INDIANA JONES 5 Without George Lucas

Is it just me or am I starting to really get excited about the possibilities of the next Indiana Jones film? I’m not sure how I missed the reports that Solo: A Star Wars Story co-screenwriter Jon Kasdan had signed on to write the script for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Indiana Jones 5, but somehow that happened. Still, the knowledge that the son of Lawerence Kasdan (aka the man who wrote Raiders of the Lost Arc and The Empire Strikes Back) is on board for Harrison Ford’s final performance as the iconic history professor/pulp hero has me pumped. And now series producer Frank Marshall has given fans a bit more to chew on about the next entry in the series!

In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Marshall confirmed that Spielberg and company were planning to revert back to the series’ original method of shooting Indiana Jones 5, i.e. going all across the planet to emphasis the film’s “global scope,” after previously opting to film Kingdom of the Crystal Skull almost entirely on United States soil over a decade ago.

Marshall was also asked about the experience of working on a new Indiana Jones film without longtime collaborator George Lucas being involved. He answered, “I love being with George and having his input, but life changes and we’re moving on. He moved on.” That’s not to say that Lucas’ influence won’t be there. “We’re very respectful of the original intentions of the movie, certainly Harrison’s character,” he added. “The serialization of what the original intention was. I’d love to have George there. I love being around George and working with him, obviously. It’ll be a little different, because the ideas are coming from a different place now.”

And while Marshall confirmed that Jon Kasdan is indeed the lead writer for Indiana Jones 5, the producer revealed that the folks at Lucasfilm have something of a writer’s room going on for the project. While Marshall opted to veer away from the term “writer’s room,” he described the configuration as “a lot of people that we trust pitch ideas and things. Gathering info.”

While obviously there’s something to be said about being worried about films being made by committee, I have a good feeling about this film. Much like with Star Wars: The Force Awakens several years ago, I get the sense that the team at Lucasfilm really want to get this movie right and send Ford’s take on the character off on a high note. Whether that results in fans deeming the film to be too safe or not, I have no idea. But in the meantime, I’m just excited to be living in the moment for this film.
