HELLBOY Reboot Pushed Back To April 2019

Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

My, oh my, how the past year has flown right by! I can hardly believe it’s already been a year since fans got an official look at David Harbour’s iteration of Hellboy. I thought for sure that had to have been something that happened back in March or something! As fans continue to wait for the first trailer of Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot, Summit Entertainment has announced some potentially disappointing news. The film’s release has been pushed back from its original January 11, 2019 date to April 12, 2019, one week after Warner Bros’ Shazam! hits theaters.

THR notes that due to the new release date, Hellboy will now be competing against Universal Studio’s The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle starring Robert Downey Jr., Fox’s Breakthrough and a Young Adult film from Avion Pictures titled After. At this point, it’s hard to guess exactly how things will turn out when all four of those films hit theaters next year. The YA movie adaptation fad seems to finally be over, so I could definitely see Hellboy performing better at the box office than After, but I know nothing about Breakthrough. Not to mention the powerhouse that is RDJ leading the Doctor Dolittle film.

In the meantime though, fans are still waiting for the first chance to see Stranger Things‘ Chief Hopper as the titular Hellboy. As previously reported, the common fan theory is that the first trailer will premiere during the movie’s panel session next week at New York Comic Con 2018.

I’m personally optimistic about the film. While it’s disappointing that neither Guillermo del Toro or Ron Perlman are returning from their take on the character, lead star Harbour is a gifted actor in his own right. Moreover director Marshall previously made a certain critically acclaimed horror film called The Descent, and we’ve heard great things about Andrew Cosby’s script. So there’s no reason to worry just yet.
