James Wan To Produce TRAIN TO BUSAN Remake

Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

James Wan is a busy man these days. Aside from finishing work on his upcoming DCU film Aquaman, Wan is continuing to spearhead The Conjuring Cinematic Universe, producing the DC Universe series Swamp Thing and a remake of Frank Marshall’s Arachnophobia. As it just so happens, Wan’s schedule just got a bit more busy!

Deadline reports that the director is now attached to produce a remake of South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho’s 2016 zombie apocalypse/action thriller Train to Busan. The side adds that the remake’s script will be written by It: Chapter Two scribe Gary Dauberman, coming off the heels of his previous collaborations with Wan writing the scripts for the first two Annabelle films and The Nun (he’s also set to direct the third Annabelle film). At the moment, no director is attached to the film.

The original Train to Busan has a straightforward premise: “While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.” Think of it as “World War Z meets Snowpiercer.”

I’m not sure what to think of this yet. While I do consider myself to be a fan of Wan, remakes are still a very tricky business. In the wrong hands, a remake typically winds up being dumbed down or played off as a cheap retread of the original work before it. In the right hands though, sometimes we get remakes like Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre, John Carpenter’s The Thing, David Cronenberg’s The Fly and hopefully also Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming Suspiria.

We’ll see what happens. I’m very interested in finding out who Wan picks to direct this version of Train to Busan. It’d be really cool if he selected someone like Reed Morano or Jennifer Kent for the gig, but that’s just me tossing an idea out into the wild.
