Mel Gibson Tapped To Direct THE WILD BUNCH Remake

Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Right now, I can’t help but think of a certain line from the “Imaginationland” episodes in South Park: “Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but the son of a [censored] knows story structure.” At this point, we should all know by now that Gibson is a gifted director and actor. We also know about the various different controversies that have surrounded him over the years too.

Following the massive success Gibson had with his 2016 directorial comeback feature Hacksaw Ridge, Deadline reports that the director has been selected by Warner Bros. to direct a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 Western epic The Wild Bunch. The site states that Gibson will also executive produce the film and co-write the script with Bryan Bagby.

The original is about “an aging group of outlaws look for one last big score as the traditional American West is disappearing around them and the industrial age is taking over. They are pursued by a posse led by a former partner they double crossed.” The site also notes the original’s history of initially being controversial among audiences due to its exceptional levels of violence, while eventually garnering a reputation as “a stylistic masterpiece.

Admittedly I’ve never seen the original version of The Wild Bunch. It sounds like a bit of a precursor to Clint Eastwood’s iconic Unforgiven, albeit with a larger main team involved. There definitely seems to be potential in the idea of remaking it for modern audiences, especially with a filmmaker as acclaimed and well-versed in the action genre as Gibson.

We’ll see what happens. I have no doubt that Gibson will direct the heck out of The Wild Bunch. After all, as South Park once put it, he knows story structure.
